The SSPEED Center is building relationships with area schools in order to promote education in the areas of severe storms and flooding. Houston's major weather related issue is flooding. Several heavy rain events occur each year with the potential for dangerous road conditons, flooded underpasses and bayous breaking over their banks.
In collaboration with the Weather Research Center, SSPEED offers short courses during the summer for K-12 grade students to raise awareness of the hazards of flooding in Houston. Students learn about watersheds, rain gauges, area bayou flows and capacities, and the importance of "Turn Around, Don't Drown".
